Pointing Dogs

Any dog that points birds is a pointing dog. That being said, there are certain breeds that are particularly well suited for training as a pointer, or are born doing it with little help at all.

Pointers (like English Pointers, German Shorthairs, German Wirehairs, Vizlas, Weimaraners, etc) are, of course, good natural pointing breeds. Many setters also naturally point, and some breeds (such as Labs) have a few bloodlines that also take well to this role.

A pointing dog's job is to locate game and show its human companions where to find it without actually spooking it into heavier cover or onto the wing before a safe and effective shot is possible. This might be considered the opposite role of the flushing dog, but both flushers and pointers may also take on the task of retrieving shot game.
